![]() ![]() ![]() The illustrative opportunities afforded by games such as D&D, Tunnels and Trolls, Runequest, Call of Cthulhu, Vampire Masquerade, Magic: The Gathering and World of Warcraft (to note just a few) overlapped that of traditional literary markets for science fiction and fantasy illustrators during the last quarter of the century, but with some important differences. Games were developed in genres such as science fiction, horror, superheroes, modern espionage and adventure, period and alternate history, and were even based on satire, parody and humor. In time, the games encompassed more than just fantasy with Tolkien-based themes. Together, Games Workshop and TSR practically made the concept of fantasy role-playing games part of American culture and played a major role in the careers of artists competing with established science fiction illustrators for assignments.
